Database Administrator III

Department: Engineering Operations

Reports to: VP of Engineering

Location: Blacksburg, VA

Classification: Full-Time

As the Database Administrator for Mailtrust, you are the ultimate data guru. You're in charge of planning our computerized databases including base definition, structure, documentation, long-range requirements, operational guidelines, and protection. You also create and keep tabs on policies, procedures, and standards relating to database management.

Our absolute, without-a-doubt, number one priority at Mailtrust is the customer experience. The enhancements to our database system that you propose and implement play a big role in improving its performance and reliability, and that helps keep our customers feeling peachy. This includes recommending failover and high availability setups, reading and interpreting monitoring stats, and providing explanations and solutions for problems that arise.

Your technical responsibilities include problem identification, database architecture definition, hardware/software specification and design, and implementation. And with your sights set on the future, you evaluate the analysis of the short-term and long-term capacity needs for database systems.

Your responsibilities to the customers (the people paying us the big bucks) include:
  • Making sure that the databases work efficiently so that the applications customers use are fast and reliable
  • Working to ensure maximum uptime of our databases
Your responsibilities to your coworkers (the people pounding on your door) include:
  • Providing direction for design activities
  • Implementing enhancements that will improve the performance and reliability of the back-end system
  • Becoming familiar with development setups and issues and taking ownership of their database issues
  • Taking ownership of development projects regarding database plans

Important skills and characteristics:

  • A minimum of a high school diploma or GED and at least two years of related database experience is required; a bachelor.s degree in a related field is preferred
  • Knowledge of MySQL and Microsoft SQL Server; the ability to read and understand SQL syntax, and to interpret and write complex SQL queries
  • Basic programming skills are preferred
  • Understanding of advanced database and server technologies, failover and high availability setups, database centric hardware deployment and data communications networks
  • Knowledgeable in advanced troubleshooting techniques at the server and database level
  • Experience with production DBA, managing multiple databases, Linux, and Windows
  • Knowledge of current relational database strategies including DB Normalization, Performance Tuning, Transactions, Replication, and Foreign Keys
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Strong ability to communicate thoughts and ideas verbally and in writing
